Projected Starting Pitchers
Ball State – TJ Harmon, RHP (1-1, 7.45 ERA, 8 Ks)
Indiana State – Tyler Grauer, LHP (0-1, 12.91 ERA, 9 Ks)
Around the Horn
Opening Pitch: Ball State (28-24) will turn to RHP TJ Harmon in Tuesday's game at Indiana State. Harmon delivered a fantastic midweek outing on May 9 against Fort Wayne. He held the Mastodons to three hits and struck out five batters in 7.1 shutout innings. At one point, Harmon retired 10 straight batters.
Indiana State (24-23) was swept by No. 13 Missouri State this past weekend. However, the Sycamores are 10-3 at home this season. Indiana State currently sits in third place in the Missouri Valley Conference. Tyler Friis leads the team in batting average (.338) and stolen bases (13) while Dane Giesler is tops on the team in home runs (14) and RBIs (40).
Series History: This is 12th consecutive year these two teams have met on the diamond. Indiana State has won six straight over the Cardinals while averaging 10 runs per game. Last year, the Sycamores scored five runs in the first innings and did not let up on the way to a 16-8 win. ISU's Kaden Moore finished with seven RBIs, which included a first inning grand slam. INF Sean Kennedy went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and three RBIs.
Indiana State leads the all-time series by a count of 90-52.
So Close to the Cycle: Two Ball State players have come very close to hitting for the cycle over the last week. INF Seth Freed went 3-for-5 with a double, triple and five RBIs at Ohio State on May 10. Two days ago against Western Carolina, OF Roman Baisa went 3-for-3 with his first collegiate home run, double, two walks and three RBIs.
No Need to Worry: Ball State is one of five teams that have already clinched a spot in next week's MAC Tournament. The Cardinals currently sit in a tie for third place in the league standings with Eastern Michigan. Ball State can still finish as high as second in the final standings, but that would require a sweep this weekend at Central Michigan.
