Around the Horn
Opening Pitch: Ball State takes a break from #MACtion this weekend to welcome Western Carolina to First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
Statistically speaking, this should be a fairly even series. In the latest NCAA RPI rankings, Western Carolina sits at No. 111 and Ball State is just below at No. 139.
Ball State enters Friday's game on a five-game winning streak, its second longest of the season. Over the last five games, Ball State is batting .335 (56-of-167) and averaging 7.8 runs per game. The Cardinals have hit a home run in four of the five games as well.
Series History: This is the first meeting between the two programs. Western Carolina won the 2016 Southern Conference Tournament and advanced the NCAA Regionals at No. 9 Clemson.
This year, the Catamounts currently sit in second place in the SoCon with a 13-8 league record. WCU has victories over No. 9 Coastal Carolina (5-4) and No. 20 NC State (9-8) this spring.
Ball State last faced a current SoCon member in 2014 (Wofford). The Cardinals won at Wofford on Feb. 16, 2014 in 10 innings, 6-4.
Thank You Seniors!: Eight Cardinals will be playing their final game at First Merchants Ballpark Complex on Sunday – RHP BJ Butler, RHP David Current, OF Matt Eppers, INF Sean Kennedy, LHP Evan Korson, INF Alex Maloney, LHP Kevin Marnon and 1B Caleb Stayton.
The 2017 senior class has compiled an overall record of 131-91 (.590) and helped the Cards win the 2014 MAC regular season title and 2016 MAC West Division banner.
Home, Sweet Home for Seniors: The four seniors comprised of OF Matt Eppers, INF Sean Kennedy, INF Alex Maloney and 1B Caleb Stayton have racked up some gaudy numbers in 18 home games this year – .359 batting average, 8 home runs, 59 RBIs and 58 runs scored.
