Winning Streak Moves to 10 Games For Ball State Baseball
April 22, 2017 | Baseball
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Four Cardinals chipped in with an RBI as the Ball State baseball team earned its 10th consecutive victory Saturday afternoon, a 6-4 win at Buffalo.
Both teams scored an early run, but Ball State (21-18, 8-6 MAC) was able to break the game open with three runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh to build a 6-1 cushion.
The Cardinals scored all three runs in the sixth after the first two batters were retired. Senior Sean Kennedy gave Ball State the lead with an RBI single to center field. Two batters later, sophomore Trent Theisen hit a double down the left field line to score two more Cardinals and make the score, 4-1.
A leadoff triple in the seventh by senior Matt Eppers, his fifth of the season, quickly jump-started the offense again. Junior Jeff Riedel brought home Eppers with a double and senior Alex Maloney added a sacrifice fly to give Ball State a five-run lead.
Buffalo (11-24, 3-8) tried to rally in the eighth inning, sparked by Phillip Tomasulo's two-run double. However, sophomore T.J. Baker shut the Bulls down in the ninth to pick up his fifth save.
Freshman starting pitcher John Baker notched his third quality start thanks to going 6.2 innings, striking out eight and holding Buffalo to one run. The righty is now 5-1 with a 2.53 ERA in his first season with the Cardinals.
Junior Seth Freed equaled his season high with three hits and scored twice.
Ball State will go for its third consecutive league series sweep tomorrow, April 23, when it faces Buffalo at 1 p.m.
