Buffalo Snaps Ball State’s Winning Streak With 6-5 Victory
April 23, 2017 | Baseball
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Chris Kwitzer provided the heroics for Buffalo Sunday afternoon with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Bulls to a 6-5 win over the Ball State baseball team.
Ball State (21-19, 8-7 MAC) had won 10 straight games overall and eight straight in the Mid-American Conference until today's loss.
Buffalo (12-23, 4-8) trailed 5-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but scored one run each in the seventh and ninth to avoid the sweep. Vinny Mallaro, who had hit a three-run home run earlier in the game, came through again in the seventh with an RBI single to left field to even the score at 5-all.
The Cardinals managed to put their leadoff batter on base in both the eighth and ninth innings. However, Ball State went 0-for-4 with a runner in scoring position in the final two frames.
Back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth with just one out. Kwitzer then took the second pitch he saw and delivered it to the grass in right field to score Phillip Tomasulo.
Senior Sean Kennedy led Ball State at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.
Mallaro finished 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs. Meanwhile, Ben Haefner chipped in with four hits and scored twice. Logan Harasta earned his first win of the season as he tossed the final 4.2 innings and limited Ball State to just one hit.
Ball State is right back in action Tuesday night, April 25, with a neutral site game against Indiana. The two teams will meet at Victory Field in Indianapolis. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets through the Indianapolis Indians via this link (CLICK HERE).
