Cardinals Notch Ninth Straight Win
April 21, 2017 | Baseball
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Ball State baseball team scored four runs in the fifth inning to rally for a 6-5 win at Buffalo Friday afternoon. The Cardinals have now won nine straight games and moved above .500 in league action.
Buffalo (11-23, 3-7 MAC) took a 5-2 lead in the third inning behind Vinny Mallaro's three-run home run.
From there, Ball State (20-18, 7-6) starting pitcher Kevin Marnon settled down and retired 11 straight Bulls to keep the Cardinals in the game. Marnon finished with eight strikeouts, equaling a career best, and earned his third consecutive win.
In the decisive fifth inning, senior Caleb Stayton got the scoring started with an RBI single. Following a walk to senior Sean Kennedy, junior Seth Freed ripped a triple down the right field line to score Stayton and Kennedy, and even the score at 4-all. Sophomore Trent Theisen capped the comeback with a sacrifice fly.
Sophomore T.J. Baker made sure the lead would hold up as he kept Buffalo off the scoreboard the final 2.2 innings. In the ninth, the Bulls got the leadoff batter on base, but Baker responded with a ground out and two strike outs to end the contest.
Freed, Stayton and Riedel each notched a pair of hits for the Cardinals. Stayton has now hit safely in 12 straight games. Senior Alex Maloney recorded his seventh home run in the first inning to give Ball State an early 1-0 lead.
The two teams continue their series with game two of three tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m.
