Kennedy’s 12th Inning Home Run Propels Ball State to 5-3 Victory
April 18, 2017 | Baseball
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Senior Sean Kennedy led off the top of the 12th inning by clobbering a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall for the deciding run in the Ball State baseball team's 5-3 win over host Purdue Tuesday night at Alexander Field.
With the win, Ball State (19-18) extended its winning streak to eight games, which is the team's longest streak since winning 10 in a row in March 2015.
The game barely made it to extra innings as Purdue (18-18) clung to a 3-2 lead going into the top of the ninth inning. Pinch hitter Colin Brockhouse led off the frame with a sharp single to left field. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs and two strikes, senior Caleb Stayton came through with an RBI single to center field to even the score.
Purdue threatened to end the game in the 10th inning. A double and single put runners on the corners with one out. However, junior shortstop Justin Kirkpatrick ended the inning by turning a ground ball behind second base into a double play.
After a quiet 11th inning, Kennedy put the Cardinals ahead for the first time with his team-leading eighth home run. Junior Seth Freed followed with a triple to the right field corner and sophomore Trent Theisen added an insurance run with an RBI single through the left side.
Ball State's bullpen was exceptional against the Boilermakers. Senior Evan Korson, sophomore Evan Marquardt, sophomore T.J. Baker and sophomore Nick Floyd combined to throw nine innings without allowing an earned run. At one point, the relievers retired 15 straight Purdue batters.
Kennedy led the Cardinals offense with three RBIs while Stayton extended his hitting streak to 11 games with three base knocks.
Purdue's Jacson McGowan had an RBI triple and also scored a run.
This was Ball State's longest game of the season and also the team's first win at Purdue since 2009. The Cardinals now have two wins against Big Ten opposition as Ball State took down No. 22 Maryland in the season opener.
Ball State returns to action this weekend with a Mid-American Conference series at Buffalo. Game one on Friday is set to begin at 3 p.m.
