Ohio Sweeps Doubleheader From Baseball Cardinals
April 01, 2017 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Visiting Ohio took both games of a doubleheader over the Ball State baseball team Saturday afternoon at First Merchants Ballpark Complex. The Bobcats won by scores of 6-4 and 7-4.
The opener was a back-and-forth affair with Ohio (13-12, 2-0 MAC) taking a 3-0 lead after its at-bat in the fifth. Ball State (11-16, 0-5) finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth behind junior Colin Brockhouse's first home run of the spring, a solo shot to right field.
A critical Ohio error allowed Ball State to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth to briefly take a 4-3 lead. With runners on first and second and nobody out, senior Alex Maloney singled to center field to plate sophomore Roman Baisa. However, the baseball trickled all the way to the outfield wall due to a fielding error, enabling Maloney and fellow senior Matt Eppers to score on the play as well.
Unfortunately, Ohio had the final response with three runs in the top of the eighth inning. Rudy Rott came up with the tying hit before Michael Klein's RBI single through the left side of the infield put the Bobcats ahead for good.
Senior pitcher BJ Butler tossed a complete game for Ball State, but was charged with five earned runs and eight hits.
In game two, Ball State raced out to a 4-0 lead after two innings only to see Ohio claw back with runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
After tallying single runs in the fourth and fifth, the Bobcats erupted for five runs in the sixth inning to take control. Ohio scored the five runs on just three hits. Ohio capitalized on a hit batter and three walks. Three of the five runs scored in the frame came with two outs. Ty Black doubled down the left field line to score two runs to make the score, 6-4. Nick Bredeson followed with an RBI single through the right side.
Ball State had chances to score in the eighth and ninth innings, but came away empty. The Cardinals put runners on second and third with no outs in the eighth and couldn't come up with the big hit. Ball State stranded two more runners on base in its final at-bat.
The two teams will conclude the league series tomorrow, April 2, at 1 p.m.
