Softball Takes Down Defending C-USA Champion FAU; 9-4
March 09, 2017 | Softball
BOCA RATON, Fla. - - Junior second baseman Maddy Labrador (Lexington, S.C./Spartanburg Methodist) blasted a pair of home runs and sophomore pitcher Aeshia Miles (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill) earned her first career complete game victory in guiding the Ball State softball team to a 9-4 win over defending C-USA Champion FAU Thursday evening at the FAU Softball Complex.
Â
In improving to 9-14 on the year, the Cardinals out-hit the Owls (13-9) by a 12-to-6 margin and scored a run in six of the game's seven innings to secure the victory. Seven different Ball State players smashed at least one hit, while five Cardinals recorded at least one RBI.
Â
Labrador led the Ball State offense by going 3-for-5 with two home runs, three runs scored and a pair of RBI. Miles allowed just six hits and four earned runs over 7.0 innings of work in the circle, striking out a career-high six batters.
Â
Ball State jumped out of the gate strong, scoring four runs on four hits in the top of the first inning. Senior center fielder Rachel Houck (Greenfield, Ind./Louisville) and third baseman Janae Hogg (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) started the rally with back-to-back singles. Sophomore designated player Madison Lee (Cerritos, Calif./Cerritos) followed with a RBI double to right center to bring home the game's first run.
Â
Hogg scored the game's second run on a wild pitch, while back-to-back walks to freshman right fielder Kennedy Wynn (New Albany, Ind./New Albany) and freshman left fielder Haley Dominique (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) loaded the bases. Junior Brittany Hopper (Scottsdale, Ariz./Phoenix College) followed with a two-run single to give the Cardinals a 4-0 advantage.
Â
Behind the momentum of the offense, the Ball State defense came up huge in the bottom of the first after a leadoff double and a stolen base. The next batter grounded the ball to Labrador at second, who threw to sophomore catcher Olivia Huffman (Woodbury, Minn./South Dakota) at home, who threw to Hopper at second for a 4-2-6 double play. Miles ended the inning two batters later with her first of a career-high six strikeouts.
Â
Labrador opened the bottom of the second inning with a single, and following a two-out walk to Lee, scored on a RBI double to left-center from Wynn.
Â
After a scoreless third inning, Wynn collected her second RBI of the game on a two-out single. Houck scored on the play after leading off the inning with a single and advancing to second on a groundout.
Â
FAU managed to get the run back in the bottom of the fourth, but an unassisted double play by Hogg at third ended the inning and kept the damage to one run. Hogg snared a sharp liner and tagged the runner at third for the pair of outs.
Â
The Cardinals responded with a two-out solo home run by Labrador in the top of the fifth to reclaim its six-run lead at 7-1.
Â
Dominique extended Ball State's lead to 8-1 with a RBI double in the top of the sixth, driving home junior pinch runner Cadie O'Donnell (Saline, Kan./Barton CC).
Â
Following a two-run bottom of the sixth from FAU, Labrador added her second home run of the game to cap the Cardinals' scoring at nine runs.
Â
The Owls added one final run in the bottom of the seventh, but could get no closer, as the Cardinals went on to win the game 9-4.
The Ball State softball team continues play in the FAU Parents' Weekend Tournament with games against LIU Brooklyn (9 a.m.) and Brown (11:15 a.m.).
