Wilmes’ Career-High 8 Ks Leads Softball to Friday Split
March 10, 2017 | Softball
BOCA RATON, Fla. - - Junior pitcher Carolyn Wilmes (Evansville, Ind./Mater Dei) turned in another dominating performance to guide the Ball State softball team to an 8-0 (5 inn.) victory over Brown Friday afternoon to close the second day of the FAU Parents' Weekend Tournament.
Wilmes struck out a career-high eight batters, while limiting the Bears' (0-6) offense to three hits and a walk over 5.0 innings of work to earn her first career complete game shutout. Her first five outs of the game were strikeouts, and she added two more in the third and one more in the fourth.
After opening the day with a 3-0 loss to LIU-Brooklyn, the Cardinals (10-15) offense rebounded in a big way in the day's second game by scoring in every inning and out-hitting the Bears by an 8-to-3 margin.
Three different Cardinals came up with a pair of hits versus Brown including freshman right fielder Kennedy Wynn (New Albany, Ind./New Albany), senior center fielder Rachel Houck (Greenfield, Ind./Louisville) and junior shortstop Brittany Hopper (Scottsdale, Ariz./Phoenix College).

GAME 1 RECAP: LIU-Brooklyn 3 – Ball State 0
In the day's opening game, the Cardinals tallied just four hits in a 3-0 loss to the Blackbirds (10-10). Freshman third baseman Janae Hogg (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) recorded Ball State's first hit in the top of the first only to be stranded on the bag.
Freshman pitcher Darcie Huber (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield Central) was able to get the Blackbirds out in order in the bottom of the frame, aided by a runner left early on a stolen base attempt by the leadoff batter who was hit by a pitch to open the game.
Unfortunately, after retiring the Cardinals in order in the second, the Blackbirds rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning to score the game's only runs. RBI singles from Kayla Gloady and Victoria Zamora drove in the first two runs, while an error allowed the third to come home.
Ball State managed to get a pair of runners on base in the top of the fourth, courtesy of two-out singles from sophomore designated player Madison Lee (Cerritos, Calif./Cerritos) and Wynn. Unfortunately, a fly out to center field ended the rally attempt.
The Cardinals had one last chance to rally in the top of the seventh after a one-out single by left fielder Haley Dominique (Oregon, Ohio/Clay). However, back-to-back fly outs ended the game.
Huber suffered the pitching loss in the contest, falling to 5-4 on the year after allowing nine hits and three runs (two earned) over 6.0 innings of work. She also struck out three batters.
GAME 2 RECAP: Ball State 8 – Brown 0
Brown opened the game with a single and walk, but Wilmes quickly asserted control by striking out the next three batters.
The Cardinals' offense followed with the first run of the contest in the bottom of the first, courtesy of a RBI single from Wynn. Houck scored on the play after singling up the middle and advancing to second on a double play.
Hopper scored Ball State's second run in the bottom of the second, crossing the plate on a wild pitch after opening the inning with a single down the left field line. She moved to second on an earlier wild pitch, while advancing to third when junior second baseman Maddy Labrador (Lexington, S.C./Spartanburg Methodist) reached base on a fielders' choice.
The Cardinals added two more runs in the bottom of the third, starting with a walk to Lee. After junior pinch runner Cadie O'Donnell (Saline, Kan./Barton CC) stole second, a one-out walk to Dominique and an infield single by junior first baseman Danae King (Glendale, Ariz./Phoenix College) loaded the bases. Hopper and followed with an RBI walk after an illegal pitch, while Labrador drew another RBI walk to batters later to move the score to 4-0.
Ball State scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, with all three scoring with two outs. Hogg opened the inning with a walk, while sophomore pinch runner Aeshia Miles (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill) proceeded to steal second. Three batters later, Dominique drew a walk and stole second to give Ball State a pair of runners in scoring position.
Hopper added her second and third RBIs of the game moments later with a two-run single to center field. The Cardinals' third run of the inning crossed the plate after back-to-back walks to sophomore catcher Olivia Huffman (Woodbury, Minn./South Dakota) and Labrador.
After holding the Bears off the board once again in the top of the fifth, the Cardinals sealed the victory on a walk-off RBI double from Wynn. Hogg scored on the play after singling to open the inning and advancing to second on a wild pitch.
