Baseball Cardinals Drop Two Games to No. 4 Oregon State
March 10, 2017 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Host Oregon State's pitching once again proved to be the difference in two wins over the Ball State baseball team Friday at Goss Stadium. The Beavers won by scores of 5-0 and 5-1.
In game one, Oregon State pitcher Luke Heimlich went eight innings and struck out 11 Cardinals. The Beavers (13-1) got all the runs they would need behind a leadoff home run from Nick Madrigal. Oregon State went ahead 2-0 in the second inning on a two-out RBI single from Cadyn Greiner.
Ball State (8-7) starting pitcher BJ Butler settled down after the second inning. The righty limited Oregon State to just four singles over the next four innings.
Unfortunately, the Beavers notched three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull away from the Cardinals.
In game two, Ball State jumped out to a 1-0 lead when senior Sean Kennedy began the second inning with a solo blast to left field. Starting pitcher Evan Marquardt held Oregon State off the scoreboard through the first four innings, but the Beavers scratched out three runs in the fifth to go ahead, 3-1.
The Cardinals were able to get the leadoff batter on base in eight of nine innings in the second game, only to go 1-for-21 (.048) with runners on base.
Oregon State put game two away with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The two teams will conclude the four-game series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 4:35 p.m. ET.
