Wynn’s Three RBIs Help Lift Softball Past St. Bonaventure; 8-1
March 05, 2017 | Softball
CLEARWATER, Fla. - - Led by a two-hit, three RBI day from freshman left fielder Kennedy Wynn (New Albany, Ind./New Albany), the Ball State softball team closed play in the USF Under Armour Invitational with an 8-1 victory over St. Bonaventure Sunday morning at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex.
With the win over the Bonnies (3-7), the Cardinals closed play in the tournament with a 4-1 record and improved to 7-12 on the year.
Wynn finished the game 2-for-3, with her first career home run in the fourth inning and a RBI single to open the scoring in Ball State's five-run sixth inning. Senior center fielder Rachel Houck (Greenfield, Ind./Louisville) and junior designated player Maddy Labrador (Lexington, S.C./Spartanburg Methodist) also had a pair of hits in the game.
After junior hurler Carolyn Wilmes (Evansville, Ind./Mater Dei) retired St. Bonaventure in order in the top of the first, Houck and freshman third baseman Janae Hogg (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) carried over their hot hitting from Saturday, logging back-to-back doubles for the game's first run.
After a pair of scoreless innings, the Bonnies managed to even the score with an unearned run in the top of the third. SBU had bases loaded with one out after a pair of singles and an error. However, Wilmes was able to limit the damage to just one unearned run with a strikeout and a little help from the defense.
After getting the batter swinging for the second out, the Bonnie's Kiera Lorenzo singled to left field to drive in the guests' only run, but a strong throw to the plate from sophomore left fielder Madison Lee (Cerritos, Calif./Cerritos) got the final out of the inning at home plate.
The Cardinals answered with Wynn's first career home run in the bottom of the inning, a two-out, two-run shot to left-center field. Sophomore catcher Olivia Huffman (Woodbury Minn./South Dakota) also scored on the blast after drawing a one-out walk and stealing second with two outs.
The flood gates opened for the Ball State offense in the bottom of the sixth, as the Cardinals score five runs on three hits and three Bonnies' errors. Following a one-out walk to junior shortstop Brittany Hopper (Scottsdale, Ariz./Phoenix College), junior pinch runner Cadie O'Donnell (Salina, Kan./Barton CC) stole second. Wynn followed with a RBI single to center field for her third RBI of the game.
Following a pitching change, sophomore second baseman Aeshia Miles (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill) logged an infield single to third. With a pair of runners on, Labrador continued the rally with a RBI single up the middle. A fielding error on a Houck grounder brought home the third run of the inning and gave the Cardinals a 6-1 lead with runners on the corners and one out.
The Cardinals followed with a successful double steal, as Houck took off for second and Labrador came home. After another SBU fielding error allowed Hogg to reach base, Houck stole third and scored the final run of the game on an errant throw into left field on the steal.
Meanwhile, Wilmes shined in the circle throughout, holding St. Bonaventure to four hits and an unearned run to pick up her second victory of the season. She also struck out six of the 27 batters she faced and retired the side in order four times, aided in part by a game-ending double play.
The Ball State softball team will have Monday off before opening a three-game, two-day stint at FGCU. The Cardinals are scheduled to play FIU at 3:15 p.m. and FGSU at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
