Cardinals Win Two More Games in Florida

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – On day two at the Snowbird Baseball Classic, the Ball State baseball team tallied wins over Northeastern (6-5) and Chicago State (8-6).
Ball State (7-3) never trailed on the day as the Cardinals jumped out to a 5-0 lead against Northeastern and a 4-0 advantage over Chicago State.
Senior Caleb Stayton had the big game versus Northeastern, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. His two-run double in the third inning put the Cardinals in front by a count of 4-0. Stayton also came up with a bases loaded double in the seventh to give Ball State a 6-3 cushion. Northeastern (2-6) scored a pair of runs in the eighth to close the gap to one run, but junior pitcher Brendan Burns held the Huskies off the scoreboard in the ninth inning to preserve the victory.
Sophomore Evan Marquardt notched his second consecutive quality start on the mound. The righty went six innings, struck out six batters and limited Northeastern to two runs.
Against Chicago State, senior Matt Eppers and junior Jeff Riedel combined for six RBIs. Eppers' two-out, two-run single in the first inning quickly put the Cardinals in front, 3-0. Riedel tallied a two-run double in the seventh inning to stretch Ball State's lead to 8-1.
Chicago State (3-6) rallied with a five-run eighth inning. Sophomore reliever Nick Floyd came on to get the final two outs in the eighth and strand two CSU runners on base.
Eppers finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs against the Cougars. Riedel recorded a pair of doubles while senior Alex Maloney and sophomore Roman Baisa each had two hits as well.
Starting pitcher Colin Brockhouse earned the win by throwing the first five innings and limiting Chicago State to one unearned run.
The Cardinals continue spring break play in Florida tomorrow, March 5 against Georgetown at 10:30 a.m.
