Golden Flashes Take Game Two Against Ball State, 6-3
March 25, 2017 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Visiting Kent State used a three-run sixth inning to take the lead for good in a 6-3 victory over the Ball State baseball team Saturday afternoon at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
Kent State (14-6, 2-0 MAC) quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning thanks to RBIs from Tim DalPorto and Dom Iero. However, Ball State (11-12, 0-2) starter Kevin Marnon regrouped and kept the Golden Flashes quiet the next four innings.
The Cardinals clawed out single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to briefly go in front, 3-2. Sophomore Roman Baisa put Ball State on the board with an RBI single in the third. Senior Sean Kennedy evened the score in the fourth as he hustled home from first base following a Griffin Hulecki single and error in the outfield. Senior Alex Maloney's sacrifice fly ball in the fifth made the score, 3-2.
Kent State responded immediately by loading the bases with no outs in the sixth. Pinch hitter Reilly Hawkins brought home a run with a sharp single through the left side of the infield. Later in the frame with two outs and the bases still loaded, DalPorto touched home on a wild pitch. Luke Burch extended the lead to 5-3 with a high chopper to shortstop that scored Iero.
Mason Mamarella added an RBI single in the ninth to account for the final run.
Ball State only mustered one hit off Kent State reliever Jared Skolnicki the final 3.2 innings.
Mamarella and DalPorto each had three hits to lead Kent State. Meanwhile, Burch finished with two hits and scored twice.
Kennedy, Hulecki and junior Seth Freed notched a pair of hits for the Cardinals.
The preseason Mid-American Conference favorites will conclude the three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
