Kent State Takes Series Finale Over Ball State, 9-4
March 26, 2017 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Sam Hurt and Pete Schuler each notched two-run home runs to lead Kent State to a 9-4 win over the Ball State baseball team Sunday afternoon at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
The Golden Flashes (15-6, 3-0 MAC) won all three games over Ball State (11-13, 0-3) in the Mid-American Conference series opener.
Kent State never trailed as the visiting team tallied two runs in the first and three more in the second to grab a 5-0 lead. Hurt hit a line drive shot over the left field wall in the second to make the score 4-0.
Ball State finally got on the board in the fourth inning thanks to junior Seth Freed's two-out, two-run home run to right field. The home run was Freed's first as a member of the Cardinals.
However, the Golden Flashes answered in the fifth inning behind Schuler's two-run long ball to center field to extend the cushion back to five runs, 7-2.
Kent State's Mason Mamarella finished with three hits and three RBIs, while Luke Burch tallied four hits and scored three times from the leadoff position.
Freed not only hit a home run, but also recorded his second triple of the season to lead Ball State. Senior Sean Kennedy added two base knocks and an RBI.
The Cardinals continue their eight-game home stand Tuesday, March 28, in a non-conference game against Butler. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
