Opening MAC Play: Ball State is set to face Kent State in three games this weekend. The series will open Mid-American Conference play for the 2017 season.
Last year, the Cardinals finished 15-9 in the MAC and won the MAC West Division regular season title. They earned the No. 2 seed in the MAC Tournament.
Kent State won the MAC regular season in 2016 with a 20-4 league mark.
Series History: Kent State leads the all-time series by a count of 64-52, but Ball State has won the last three meetings in Muncie. This is the first meeting between the two squads at Ball State since 2014.
Last year, the Golden Flashes beat the Cardinals, 8-3, in an early non-conference game in Florida. It was a close contest until Kent State rallied to score five runs in the top of the eighth. Senior INF Alex Maloney and senior C/1B Caleb Stayton each recorded three hits and an RBI in the effort.
Battle on the Mound: Ball State and Kent State have two of the top three team ERAs in the MAC. Ball State leads the league with a 3.26 ERA while Kent State ranks third at 4.04.
Trip, Trip, Triple: Senior OF Matt Eppers registered two triples against Purdue on March 22. He now has 16 career triples, which ranks second in the Ball State record books. Eppers led the MAC with seven triples in 2015.
Butler Comes Up with a First: Senior RHP BJ Butler picked up his first collegiate complete game shutout in the 6-0 win over Dayton on March 18. Butler equaled his career high with nine strikeouts. He is the first Ball State pitcher to throw a complete game shutout since Zach Plesac beat Miami (Ohio) on March 26, 2016.
Maloney on a Roll: Senior INF Alex Maloney has notched a hit in six of the past seven games. He tied a career high with four hits against Dayton on March 18. Maloney also tallied his 100th career RBI last weekend.
