March 19, 2017 | Baseball
DAYTON, Ohio – Ball State and Dayton wrapped up its weekend four-game series with a doubleheader at Dayton Sunday afternoon. The host Flyers took the opener, 3-2, before Ball State rolled to a 10-2 win in the finale.
Freshman starting pitcher John Baker held Dayton without a hit into the eighth inning in game two. The Flyers finally broke up the no-hitter with one out in the eighth thanks to Takahiro Yamada's pinch-hit single. Baker responded by inducing a ground ball double play to end the inning. The native of Hartland, Michigan finished with eight strikeouts, one walk, one hit allowed and no runs scored in eight innings pitched. Baker is now 2-0 with a 0.47 ERA in five appearances this season.
Ball State (11-9) broke game two open with six runs in the third inning, all coming with two outs. Freshman Joe Gunn, sophomore Zach Milam, senior Matt Eppers and sophomore Roman Baisa tallied RBIs in the big inning.
The Cardinals eventually extended their lead to 10-0 in the sixth inning. Ball State equaled a season high with 16 hits. Gunn, Milam and junior Seth Freed each notched three hits. Milam went 3-for-4 with a double and a personal-high three RBIs while Eppers chipped in with a two-run triple.
Dayton (6-11) scored its only two runs off the Ball State bullpen in the ninth inning.
In game one, Dayton took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth. Maverick Prine provided Dayton's lone RBI of the contest with a two-out RBI single in the fifth.
Trailing 3-1, Ball State put two runners on base in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, but could not push across a run. The Cardinals managed to plate a run in the ninth and got the tying run into scoring position with one out. However, Dayton pitcher Jordan Cox ended the game with a ground out and a line out.
Dayton's Mason Kutruff earned the win as the lefty pitched seven innings, struck out six batters and held Ball State to one run.
Next up for Ball State is a home game against Big Ten opponent Purdue on Wednesday, March 22. First pitch at First Merchants Ballpark Complex is set for 3 p.m.
