Men’s Volleyball Comes up Big With Sweep of McKendree
February 04, 2017 | Men's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind.– Less than a year after McKendree came to Muncie and upset the Cardinals in the first round of the MIVA tournament ending their 2016 season, the No. 12 Ball State men's volleyball team got even with a 3-0 victory over the Bearcats Saturday night.
Senior Brendan Surane came out swinging and led the team with 16 kills and a .625 hitting percentage. Surane also added five digs and three blocks. Freshman Matt Szews tallied 10 kills, eight digs and one block. Junior Anthony Lebryk knocked down eight kills while sophomore Parker Swartz added four. Senior Connor Gross had 37 assists in the contest. The Cardinals finished the match with 42 kills, 17 block assists and a .430 hitting percentage.
"I think Connor Gross did a really good job running our offense tonight," said head coach Joel Walton. "We knew, defensively, there were some places we wanted to attack. Connor distributed the ball really well and we ran back row attacks with Brendan Surane, which seemed tp worked really well. When you do that, you don't just have your guys running the front block, you have two back row guys coming in as well. That makes it really hard on the team defensively."
In the opening set, Surane had six of the Cardinals 12 kills. The Cardinals scored the first three points of the set and went on to win with a final score of 25-16.
McKendree had 16 kills and a .323 hitting percentage in set two, but fell short to the Cardinals, 25-21. Lebryk knocked down six kills in the second set, one being the set winner, while Szews tallied five. Ball State finished set two with a .500 hitting percentage.
The Cardinals came out with a fire in the third set, winning 25-16. Surane led the Cards once again with six kills. Junior Mitch Weiler and Szews both added two kills. Ball State won the set and the match on a Bearcat attack error.
Ball State moves to 9-2 overall and 1-1 in the MIVA. The Cardinals will be in action again on Tuesday, Feb. 7 as they take on conference foe Fort Wayne. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m. in Worthen Arena.
