Women's Basketball Loses At Home To MAC East Division Leader Ohio, 72-68
February 11, 2017 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - Senior center Renee Bennett scored 27 points in the Cardinals 72-68 loss to Mid-American Conference East Division leader Ohio Saturday afternoon in Worthen Arena. With the loss, Ball State drops to 17-8 on the season and 10-3 in league action while the Bobcats improve to 18-5 on the year and 9-3 in MAC action.
Bennett's 27-point performance was just one shy of her career best. She also registered her second double-double of the week and 10th of her career after pulling down 12 rebounds. Senior guard Jill Morrison reached double figures after scoring 14 points on the day which included four 3-pointers and junior guard Frannie Frazier ended the day with 10.
For the game, the Cardinals won the rebounding war (41-to-25) while also scoring more points in the paint (24-to-10). Both teams shot similarly from the floor but Ohio had the edge from behind the arc.
Both teams traded baskets to start the contest, before Ball State put together a 12-2 run in a span of four minutes to take an 18-8 lead with 2:18 remaining in the first quarter. The Cardinals run was sparked by a 3-point basket from Bennett, she also had help from fellow teammates junior forward Moriah Monaco, sophomore guard Carmen Grande and Morrison. Ohio retaliated quickly with a 6-0 run to cut Ball State's lead to four (18-14) to end quarter.
The Bobcats then dominated the second quarter outscoring Ball State 22-12 while holding the Cardinals to an uncharacteristic 20 percent (3-of-15) shooting from the field. Ohio got hot from the 3-point line in the second period shooting 45.5 percent from behind the arc while Ball State was unable to make one 3-point basket. The Cardinals would find themselves down by six (36-30) at intermission.
By the 5:11 mark in the third quarter, Ohio had built its largest margin of the contest 11 (48-37) off of a 3-point basket from Quiera Lampkins. Ball State started to pick up the pace after a layup from Bennett and the Cardinals managed to close the quarter scoring 11 of the last 16 points to cut Ohio's lead to five (53-48).
The Cardinals continued their fight in the fourth quarter and outscored Ohio 15-to-8 in a span of seven minutes to take back the lead (63-62) with 3:29 left to play. Five different Cardinals scored during the late spurt including a timely 3-pointer from Monaco off of the assist from Morrison. But unfortunately for the Ball State, Ohio hit back-to-back 3-point baskets to go back up by five (68-63) with under a minute remaining.
In Ball State's last efforts to win the ball game the Cardinals were forced to foul the Bobcats. Frazier did knock down one from behind the arc with six seconds on the clock but Ohio made its free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
After today's contest, the Ball State women's basketball team will have a biweek from Mid-American Conference action and resume play on Saturday at Northern Illinois. The game is set for a 2 p.m. tip off (EST) and will be aired live on ESPN3.
