DEKALB, Ill. – With only four games remaining in Mid-American Conference regular season play, the Cardinals earned a pivotal road win Saturday afternoon after defeating Northern Illinois by a score of 92-84 in the Convocation Center.
With the win, Ball State improves to 18-8 overall and 11-3 in the MAC while Northern Illinois falls to 18-7 and 11-3 in conference action.
Senior center Renee Bennett registered her third-straight double-double after a 22-point, 13 rebound performance while teammate junior forward Moriah Monaco also had 22 points on the day. Sophomore guard Destiny Washington earned a double-double after scoring 17 points while pulling down 12 boards. Senior guard Calyn Hosea rounded out the double digit scoring for Ball State with 16.
Bennett opened the game with back-to-back baskets which included one from behind the arc and then a fast break layup underneath the basket, to give Ball State the early 5-0 edge over Northern Illinois. After that, both teams traded baskets pretty much the remainder of the quarter. Ball State and Northern Illinois would have small scoring spurts but not enough to take a significant lead. Monaco knocked down a 3-pointer and Hosea hit a jumper to give Ball State back a five -point (29-24) advantage over the Huskies to end the quarter.
To start the second period, Washington opened it with a 6-0 run to put Ball State up by 11 (35-24). But Northern Illinois rallied back scoring eight straight points in exactly a two-minute stretch to cut the Cardinals lead to four (38-34) with 3:45 remaining in the half. The Huskies continued to tally points and take Ball State out of their offensive game but crucial buckets from junior guard Frannie Frazier, senior guard Jill Morrison and Washington helped the Cardinals hold onto a slim 45-42 lead over Northern Illinois at intermission.
The Cardinals finally got their offensive rhythm going in the third quarter shooting 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the floor. Ball State had built its largest lead of the contest 14 (69-55) with 1:55 left in quarter which came off of a basket from Washington.
But things quickly changed in the final stanza, although the Cardinals kept control they would soon lose it as the Huskies went on a 19-9 run in the fourth quarter to knot the game 80-80 with 2:06 left in the game.
Ball State answered and was resilient to the Huskies run. The Cardinals showed maturity and composure on the court as they have all season long and would go back up by seven (87-80) with 40 seconds remaining. Northern Illinois, in its last efforts to win the ball game, was forced to foul Ball State as time was winding down. But the Cardinals managed to close the game going 5-of-6 from the charity stripe to win the ball game.
The Ball State women's basketball team continues its two-game road swing when it travels to Western Michigan Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tipoff in University Arena. The Cardinals won their first meeting against the Broncos by a score of 61-56 on Jan. 7 in Worthen Arena and lead the all-time series record, 40-35.
