WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Cardinals (7-0) big third quarter lifted Ball State past Big Ten foe Purdue (5-4) by a score of 66-60 Monday night in Mackey Arena.
"I am proud of my kids, Ball State head coach Brady Sallee said. "I thought we were tough, we answered the bell. I thought we stretched it out there a little bit but in true Purdue fashion they made all the plays it seemed like at the end and made it a little bit crazy. But our kids didn't get caught up in turnovers and we just went back down and scored. This is a big one for us and we are excited about it."
The Cardinals are off to their best start in program history. Tonight's win marks the first time since 1979 that a Ball State women's basket team has defeated Purdue. Sallee has now defeated four Power 5 conference teams during his tenure at Ball State; Minnesota (54-51, 2012-13), Iowa (77-72, 2015-16), Vanderbilt (88-79, 2017-18) and now Purdue (66-60, 2017-18).
Senior forward Moriah Monaco led all players with a game-high 18 points. Monaco has now scored in double figures for the Cardinals 61 times in her career. She also registered her third career double-double after pulling down 11 rebounds on the night. Junior guard Carmen Grande finished the night with 17 points while teammate senior guard Frannie Frazier chipped in 12.
Tonight's game came down to defense and the Cardinals won that battle over the Boilermakers. Ball State shot 40 percent from the field while holding Purdue to 33 percent from the floor.
For the first five minutes of play to start the game, the Cardinals defense appeared to be too much for the Boilermakers. Ball State held Purdue without a field goal up until the 3:31 mark. The defensive stance allowed the Cardinals to take an 8-2 advantage over the Boilermakers heading into the first media timeout. After that, Purdue went on a 14-6 scoring spree over the remainder of the quarter to take a 16-14 lead over Ball State heading into the second stanza.
Both teams struggled offensively in the second quarter but Monaco drained a 3-point basket in the opening minutes to give Ball State back its lead. With 6:36 remaining the first half, junior guard Jasmin Samz drained one from behind the arc, sparking a 6-3 run to put the Cardinals back up by five (24-19) at the 4:20 mark. Purdue answered quickly to make it a one-point ball game (26-25) with 1:19 on the clock but as time was winding down Monaco and Frazier orchestrated a 5-0 scoring spurt to give Ball State the 31-25 advantage heading into intermission.
Purdue cut the margin to three (31-28) with just seconds shaved off the clock in the third frame. But Ball State punched back with a 9-0 run to take its largest lead of the ball game (40-28) at the 6:23 mark. Baskets from Frazier, senior forward Destiny Washington, Samz and Grande helped the Cardinals during their scoring spree. The Cardinals outscored the Boilermakers in the third stanza, 13-to-7.
The Boilermakers came on strong in the fourth quarter to make it a close contest with seconds left but the Cardinals kept their composer the remainder of the contest. Some big shots from Grande and Monaco as the clock was ticking allowed the Cardinals to seal the victory.
The Ball State women's basketball team will return to Worthen Arena for the remainder of non-conference action. The Cardinals will host Southeast Missouri State Thursday night at 7 p.m. After that, Ball State will host Oakland City (Dec. 10/2p.m.), Austin Peay (Dec. 18/11 a.m.) and Western Kentucky (Dec. 21/7 p.m.).
