Cardinals add size, versatility to backcourt for next season
MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State men's basketball team added size at the guard position for its future rosters, signing another Indiana product and one from Illinois.
The Cardinals inked 6-foot-5 Jarron Coleman (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral HS) and 6-foot-6 Kani Acree (Carbondale, Ill./Carbondale Community HS) to national letters of intent.
Jarron Coleman
Coleman is a preseason first-team all-city selection heading into his senior season at Cathedral for coach Jason Delaney. He averaged 19.7 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists last year on his way to a spot on the Indiana Junior All-Star Team.
"Jarron is a very skilled guard who can score in a lot of ways," Ball State head coach James Whitford said. "He can get to the basket; he can shoot the basketball. Jarron is blossoming as a player and is still a shadow of who he can become one day. He's a good player now, but his best is yet to come. He goes to a very good academic school, and I think he'll represent us very well both on and off the court."
A four-year varsity player, Coleman raised his scoring average by more than 10 full points from his sophomore to his junior season. Delaney describes him as someone who can play or guard any position on the floor for Cathedral.
Coleman was a standout over the summer for Spiece Indy Heat, ranking in the top five on the Nike EYBL circuit in steals. He is rated as the No. 7 player in the state of Indiana's 2018 class by 247Sports.
Kani Acree
Acree is a versatile player at Carbondale for long-time coach Jim Miller. He is a two-time all-conference player, including a first-team selection last year as a junior.
"Kani is a unique player," Whitford said. "He has great size, and he can play every position from the 1 through the 3. We believe he has an incredibly high ceiling as a basketball player. Kani is a great kid, a great teammate and extraordinarily unselfish. He gets rave reviews from everyone at his school, from administrators to teachers to coaches. He's someone we are really excited to coach."
Acree averaged 15.9 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game last season on his way to All-South and team MVP honors. Miller describes him as an unselfish player who can handle the ball and score in a variety of ways.
Acree played his AAU basketball for Team RWA.
Ball State is set to begin the 2017-18 season at 7 p.m. Friday at Dayton on Spectrum Sports Ohio and the A-10 Network. The Cardinals defeated Saint Francis (Ind.) 91-67 earlier this week in exhibition action.
