WBB Improves To 6-0; Defeats In-State Rival Butler, 87-75

MUNCIE, Ind. - Behind senior forward Moriah Monaco's 23-point performance off of 62 percent shooting, the Cardinals remained undefeated (6-0) with their 87-75 victory over in-state rival Butler (4-4) Wednesday night in Worthen Arena.
Monaco has now scored in double figures 60 times in her career after tonight's performance. The Cardinals had three other players reach double digits for the night. Senior guard Frannie Frazier chipped in 17-points, while teammates junior guards Carmen Grande and Jasmin Samz each finished the game with 15 apiece. Grande also dished out nine assists and pulled down six rebounds. Defensively, freshman forward Oshlynn Brown continues to excel on the on the boards finishing the game with 10.
The game statistic that stood out the most for the Cardinals was outside shooting. Ball State shot 60 percent from behind the arc while Butler was held to 33.3 percent from the 3-point line.
The first quarter began with the Cardinals and the Bulldogs playing a back and forth ball game, as both teams exchanged baskets in transition. The fast-paced start resulted in nine lead changes between the two teams. Freshman guard Maliah Howard-Bass knocked down a 3-point basket at the buzzer to give Ball State a five-point advantage (32-27) over Butler heading into the second stanza.
The Bulldogs began the second period with a 4-0 run, cutting the Cardinals' lead to one. Monaco then answered at the opposite end of the court converting on a 3-point basket which sparked a 7-0 scoring spree for the Cardinals. After that, Ball State went on cruise control the remainder of the half, eventually building a 14-point cushion (53-39) over the Bulldogs at intermission.
The Cardinals stepped up their defense in the second quarter, holding Butler to 33.3 percent from the field. Ball State also managed to put up its best shooting first half performance of the year, hitting 62.1 percent of its shots. Monaco led the Cardinals at the half with 11 points and was perfect from the field (4-of-4).
The Bulldogs attempted to chip away at the deficit in the third quarter, but the Cardinals hot hand shooting was too much for Butler to overcome. Ball State had built its largest lead of the game (67-46) with 3:12 remaining in the third frame which came off of a 3-pointer from Frazier.
Butler turned things around in the fourth quarter, outscoring Ball State 15-6 to come within seven points (78-71) of the Cardinals with 2:28 left in the game. Samz would quickly hit a 3-point basket off of the assist from Monaco to put Ball State back up by eight. After that, the Bulldogs would foul which kept them from gaining anymore momentum. Ball State went 6-of-6 from the charity stripe to close the game, allowing the Cardinals to increase their win streak to six and their best start in program history.
The Ball State women's basketball team will face its second in-state opponent when it travels to Big Ten foe Purdue Monday night at 7 p.m. in Mackey Arena.
