
WBB Remains Undefeated With 85-65 Win At Tennessee State

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- A 20-point career high scoring performance from senior guard Frannie Frazier helped the Cardinals cruise to an 85-65 victory over Tennessee State Wednesday afternoon in the Gentry Center. With the win, Ball State improves to 5-0 on the season for the first time since 2006-07 while Tennessee State falls to 0-3.
True freshman Maliah Howard-Bass scored a season best 19 points on 58 percent (7-of-12) shooting to go along with four rebounds and four assists. Junior guard Jasmin Samz, not only had a strong start again for the Cardinals but also ended the day in doubles figures with 11 points. Senior forward Moriah Monaco scored in doube digits for the 59th time in her career. She finished the day with 10 points while also leading the Cardinals on the glass with eight boards.
The first quarter began with the Cardinals and the Tigers swapping blows, totaling four lead changes and one tie for over a five minute span. Samz, started off solid from behind the arc scoring six points and Frazier followed by hitting some key baskets to give Ball State a 17-13 advantage heading into the second frame.
Ball State opened the second period with a 13-6 run, sparked by a tip-in from Frazier. Sophomore forward Aliyah Walker notched six points of her own during that scoring stretch for the Cardinals. The Cardinals continued their momentum, as Ball State's Howard-Bass and forward Oshlynn Brown stepped up their game fighting for rebounds and baskets. Ball State went into the half with a 41-26 lead after shooting 51.6 from the floor while holding Tennessee State to 32.3 percent from the field.
The Tigers attempted to chip away at the deficit in the third quarter, pulling within 12 (55-43) with 2:34 left on the clock. After that, Ball State regained its momentum with a 10-0 scoring spree which was sparked by a 3-point basket from junior guard Nakeya Penny off of the assist from senior guard Carmen Grande. Penny then sealed the 22-point (65-43) advantage with a layup as time expired.
The Cardinals shot 56.3 percent from the field in the third quarter and 50.8 for the game. Ball State's offensive showing was too much for the Tigers to overcome in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals held Tennessee State to 24-of-68 from the floor. Ball State also out-rebounded Tennessee State, 42-to-37.
The Ball State women's basketball team returns to action at home in Worthen Arena Wednesday against in-state rival Butler at 7 p.m. The Cardinals and the Bulldogs have met 23 times with the Bulldogs leading the all-time series record 14-9. Ball State has won the last two meetings over Butler.
