Field Hockey Set to Honor Seniors in Saturday’s Contest

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State field hockey team is back home to take on Appalachian State on Saturday, Oct. 21. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
Prior to the Mid-American Conference matchup, the three Cardinal seniors will be honored for their commitment to the field hockey program. The three seniors are Carley Shannon, Abbey Main and Merinda Morley.
Shannon is a four year letterwinner and notched her first career goal against St. Louis as a freshman. As a sophomore, she started 17 of the Cardinals 18 games and tallied three goals on the season. Last season, Shannon started all 19 games as co-captain of the squad. She was also named to the Academic All-MAC team and named a NFHCA National Scholar of Distinction. She finished her junior season with two goals and a .385 shot on goal percentage. So far into her senior season, Shannon has played all fourteen games and tallied two goals and three assists.
Main is a four-year letter winner along with being named to the Academic All-MAC team as a Cardinal. She recorded her first collegiate goal as a freshman against St. Louis. Abbey saw action in all 18 games as a sophomore and finished the season with a .750 shot on goal percentage. She finished her junior year with two goals and three assists. So far into the 2017 season, she has competed in all 14 games for Ball State, and is at the top of the Cardinals' scoreboard with four goals.
Morley is a four year letterwinner and a 2017 team captain. She has competed in all 14 games so far this season. As a redshirt freshman, Morley competed in all 16 games and scored her first career goal against Appalachian State. She finished that season with two goals, two assists and a .615 shot on goal percentage. In the 2015 season, she saw action in 18 games, including seven starts. Morley was the second leading scorer for the Cardinals and finished the season with a .750 shot on goal percentage. Last season, she started all 19 games for Ball State. She recorded two goals and one assist along with being named to the Academic All-MAC team.
The three seniors and the rest of the Cardinal squad will look to take down conference foe Appalachian State, who currently sits at fourth in the MAC at 2-3. The Mountaineers are led by Taylor Cimbalist, who has notched 10 goals and six assists this season. In the cage for App State, Rachel Gaines has 96 saves in 14 games. Gaines averages 4.09 saves per game and boasts a .681 save percentage.
Last year when the two teams met, the Cardinals were able to pick up a 3-1 victory. Ball State tallied eight shots, four of which were on goal, along with three assists and three saves in that contest.
