Cross Country’s Emily Tromp Named MAC Runner of the Week
September 27, 2016 | Cross Country
CLEVELAND, Ohio - - After her first-place finish at the Cardinal Duals last Friday, Ball State freshman cross country runner Emily Tromp (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) has been named the Mid-American Conference Runner of the Week.
"We are really proud of Emily and how well she has developed over the past few weeks," head coach Brian Etelman said. "Her performance last Friday was a brief glimpse of her potential both for this season and long term over her time here. While a small step, it is a sign that our program is headed in the right direction and we believe we will be able to further show that at the MAC Championships in about five weeks."
Tromp led Ball State to the finish line and picked up her first collegiate victory by setting a blistering 5K pace of 18:30.7. The effort is a personal best and the fifth-fastest 5K time ran on the Muncie Elks course, just a minute shy of the meet record. Tromp's previous best collegiate 5K time was 19:12.2 set at the Butler Open (Sept. 2).
Tromp is the first Ball State student-athlete to be named MAC Cross Country Runner of the Week since Oct. 17, 2007, when then-sophomore Ali Bishel received the award. Bishel also owns the Muncie Elks 5K course record of 17:30 set in 2009.
The Ball State cross country team returns to action Friday, when it travels to Notre Dame for the Joe Piane Invitational. The Cardinals are slated to run in the 4:15 p.m. Gold Race.
