MUNCIE, Ind.—The Ball State field hockey team is kicking off the regular season with two road games over the weekend. The Cardinals will face Appalachian State on Friday, Aug. 26 at 3 p.m. in their opener.
Ball State came out on top last year against ASU with a 3-2 victory over the Mountaineers at home. The Cardinals will then travel to Davidson on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 1 p.m.
This year's team is led by a new coaching staff that is focused on getting the program back on a winning track. Christy Longacre, a two-year assistant coach for the Cardinals and two-time All-American as a player at Old Dominion, was named head coach in December.
“It's been a good transition,” Longacre said. “I'm seeing leaders step up and new players who have been coming in and stepping up as well. The team unity that they are building right now is different than the other years and I'm really excited to keep that going forward.”
The Cardinals have the help of three top returning players this season. Lexi Kavanaugh started all 18 games as a junior and led the team with seven goals in 2015. She was also named to the All-MAC second team last season. The team's second leading scorer, redshirt junior Merinda Morley, will also be back on the turf this season. Back in the goal for Ball State, is senior Jordan Dues. She started all 18 games last season and registered 99 saves.
These two games are the first of 11 consecutive road games for the Cardinals. Ball State's home opener is set for Oct. 3 against Ohio State.
