Opening Pitch: Ball State has won three straight games and six of its last seven overall entering this weekend. The Cardinals lead the MAC in batting average (.295) and rank second in team ERA (4.05).
Ball State has been especially good at home this spring. The Cardinals are 7-2 and are averaging more than nine runs a game at Ball Diamond. RF Alex Call (.512), 1B Caleb Stayton (.484) and SS Alex Maloney (.410) are all batting better than .400 at home.
Series History: Western Michigan leads the all-time series by a count of 97-70. Since head coach Rich Maloney returned to Ball State in 2013, the Cardinals hold a slight 6-5 edge in 11 meetings.
The two teams met five times in 2014, including twice in the MAC Tournament. Western Michigan won two of three games last year in Kalamazoo.
Coach Maloney played at WMU in the mid-1980s.
Preserving the Lead: Ball State is 18-0 this season when leading after seven innings. RHP BJ Butler has tallied seven saves in 12 appearances, including Tuesday's 5-4 win over Xavier.
Among the National Leaders: RF Alex Call enters the weekend ranked in the top-10 nationally in doubles (2nd), hits (3rd) and runs (8th). He is currently riding a 14-game hitting streak and has multiple hits in 11 of those contests. Call's .420 batting average is tops in the MAC.
