Men's Golf Climbs to Seventh, Watts Named All-MAC

SYLVANIA, Ohio -- The Ball State men's golf team closed Saturday with its best round of the Mid-American Conference Championships, led by a 70 (-1) from Michael VanDeventer.
The Cardinals moved up one spot to seventh place on the final leaderboard, while sophomore Johnny Watts was named to the All-MAC Second Team at the post-tournament awards ceremony.
VanDeventer birdied four of his first seven holes Saturday and carded five birdies for the round at Highland Meadows Golf Club. The sophomore climbed nine spots to finish as the top Ball State player in 14th place with a 72-hole total of 297 (+13). He was one spot ahead of teammate Timothy Wiseman, who tied for 15th at 298 (+14).
In addition to VanDeventer's 70, the Cardinals counted a pair of 73's from James Blackwell and Keegan McKinney along with a 77 (both Wiseman and Watts) in the final round. The team score of 293 gave Ball State a tournament total of 1198 (+62).
Kent State, which entered the day with a 15-stroke lead, went on to win by 20 shots. The Golden Flashes finished with a total of 1152 (+16) for the week, while Eastern Michigan (+36) was second and Miami (+40) moved up to third.
Akron's George Baylis claimed individual medalist honors, coming from behind by posting the lowest score of the day by three strokes, a 67. Baylis finished at 283 (-1), three shots ahead of Kent State's Ian Holt, Eastern Michigan's Kyle Rodes and 54-hole leader Joo-Young Lee of Northern Illinois.
