Caleb Stayton's Grand Slam Highlights 20-3 Win Over Ohio

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team racked up four home runs, including a fifth inning grand slam by junior Caleb Stayton, on the way to a 20-3 win over Ohio Sunday afternoon at Ball Diamond. The Cardinals scored 37 runs in the final two games against the Bobcats.
Ball State (17-12, 4-2 MAC) scored twice in the first inning and never looked back against Ohio (11-16, 2-4). After scoring two more in the third and fourth innings, the Cardinals put the game away with a six-run fifth inning.
In the fifth, senior Scott Tyler hit his first home run of the season, a solo blast to right field to make the score, 7-2. Five batters later, Stayton came to bat with junior Sean Kennedy on third, junior Alex Call on second and junior Alex Maloney on first. Stayton then took the 2-2 pitch to dead center field for his sixth home run and the team's first grand slam this spring.
Call and Maloney added back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning.
Ball State's top three batters in the lineup – Call, Maloney and Stayton – combined to go 10-for-16 at the plate with three home runs, two doubles, nine runs scored and 13 RBIs.
The 20 runs were the most scored by the Cardinals since matching that number in a 20-5 win over Eastern Michigan on April 5, 2014. Ball State scored in 13 of the final 16 innings in the series versus Ohio.
Sophomore pitcher Brendan Burns (4-1) earned the win as the righty went 5.0 innings, struck out six batters and only gave up one earned run. Ball State's bullpen limited Ohio to three hits and one run the final four frames.
The Cardinals continue their seven-game home swing this Tuesday, April 5 against Xavier. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
