
Downs Clinches Men's Tennis 4-3 Win Over Buffalo

MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State men's tennis player Patrick Downs, won a three set thriller to clinch a 4-3 win over Buffalo Friday afternoon at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center. With the win, Ball State improves to 11-10 overall and 3-2 in Mid-American Conference action while Buffalo drops to 9-8 and 2-4 in league play.
The Cardinals No. 2 doubles tandem of Lucas Andersen and Patrick Downs were fast off the court in doubles action. The twosome did not give up a game against Buffalo's Akhil Mehta and Tony Miller, winning the match by a score of 6-0. Buffalo then knotted doubles play 1-1 with a win on court three before Andrew Stutz and teammate Conner Andersen would take the doubles point from the Bulls with their 6-4 defeat over Pablo Alvarez and Amar Hromic.
In singles action, Lucas Andersen easily handled Alvarez in straight sets on the top court to give Ball State the 2-0 edge over the Bulls. Buffalo went on to make it a 2-1 match after Akhil Mehta took down Conner Andersen, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4 singles. Marko Guzina then put the Cardinals back up 3-1 after beating Tony Miller on court six, 6-1, 7-5.
With three matches remaining, Ball State had put itself in good shape to win the match but Buffalo took victories on courts two and three to even the score, 3-3. The match would come down to No. 5 singles where Downs had lost the first set 6-1 to Ethan Nittolo. Downs then rallied for a 7-5 win in sets two and three, lifting the Cardinals to victory. This was the second straight time in two conference matches that Downs had overcome a three set thriller to win the match for Ball State.
The Ball State men's tennis team continues Mid-American Conference action at league leader Western Michigan, Sunday at Sorensen Courts with a 1 p.m. first serve.
