Ball State Baseball Takes Two Games From Cincinnati

CONWAY, S.C. – The Ball State baseball team won a pair of tight games over Cincinnati at the 2016 Chanticleer Classic Saturday by scores of 4-3 and 6-4. This was the first meeting between the two schools since 2006.

In both games, Ball State's (5-6) bullpen was able to keep Cincinnati (1-9) off the scoreboard in the late innings. The Cardinals' bullpen tossed seven innings today without allowing a single run. Sophomore Colin Brockhouse went the final four innings in game one and gave up just three hits. In the nightcap, junior BJ Butler retired the final nine Cincinnati batters in order.

Junior Sean Kennedy provided the game-winning hit in the 4-3 win. With the Cardinals trailing 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, sophomore Caleb Stayton led off the frame with his second home run of the season to even to the score. Brockhouse, who also went 3-for-4 at the plate in the first game, followed Stayton's blast with a double. One out later, Kennedy singled up the middle to score Brockhouse.

Brockhouse worked out of a jam in the eighth inning to preserve the win. The Bearcats were able to get a runner to third base with one out, but Brockhouse came up with a strike out and fly out to strand the tying run.

Sophomore pitcher Brendan Burns (2-0) worked six innings, struck out eight batters and gave up three earned runs in the 6-4 victory.

Cincinnati scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to briefly take a 3-2 lead. Ball State responded with two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and one more in the eighth to hold off the Bearcats.

Brockhouse's sacrifice fly in the fifth inning put the Cardinals ahead for good. Spaulding and junior Jarett Rindfleisch each notched three hits in the second game.

Ball State wraps up play at the Chanticleer Classic tomorrow, March 6, against host Coastal Carolina. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
