Cardinals Fall to No. 13 Ole Miss, 7-3

CONWAY, S.C. – The Ball State baseball team opened play at the 2016 Chanticleer Classic Friday afternoon with a 7-3 loss to No. 13 Ole Miss. Ball State was trying to pick up a win over a nationally ranked team for the fourth straight year.
Ball State (3-6) jumped on top of Ole Miss in the top of the third inning, 2-1, thanks to junior Alex Maloney's two-run double.
However, the Rebels immediately responded in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for good. Cameron Dishon led off with his first home run of the year to tie the game. Colby Bortles then came through with a two-out, two-run home run to give Ole Miss (8-1) a 4-2 lead.
The Rebels sent nine batters to the plate in the fifth inning and scored three more runs to pull away.
This was the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
Maloney led Ball State's offensive effort by going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Junior Sean Kennedy also finished with two hits and scored a run.
Junior starting pitcher Kevin Marnon allowed all seven runs in 4.1 innings of work. Senior Matt Haro and junior Matt Current worked the final 3.2 innings and only allowed one hit.
For Ole Miss, Bortles went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Henri Lartigue went 3-for-3 with a walk. Starting pitcher Brady Bramlett improved to 3-0 by going six innings and giving up just two runs.
Ball State continues play at the Chanticleer Classic tomorrow, March 5, with two games against Cincinnati – 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
