Smith Leads Men?s Swim & Dive In Second Day Of Competition

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Ball State men's swim and dive team remains in sixth place with 77 points after completing the second day of competition at the 2016 Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by Eastern Michigan.
Senior Cole Smith was the first Cardinal to earn individual points for Ball State in the four day competition as he participated in the finals of the 50 yard freestyle. Smith clocked a time of 21.19 in the finals and placed 16th overall to earn one point for Ball State. Smith first touched the wall in 20.93 in the prelims, which was a new season-best for the Columbia City, Ind. native.
The Cardinals added to its successes on the day by tallying 24 team points in the 200 freestyle relay when Smith combined with junior Austin Green, freshman Zach Reichle and junior Andrew Carlson to clock a 1:23.95. Although Ball State finished seventh, the time marked a new team season-best by nearly two seconds.
Host school Eastern Michigan continues to lead the charts as it heads into day three of competition with 279 points, while Buffalo snuck past Missouri State to sit in second with 247 points to the Bears 225. Ball State's 77 points are narrowly ahead of Evansville, who sits in seventh with 74 points.
The Cardinals return to Jones Natatorium tomorrow morning for preliminary sessions starting at 11 a.m., followed final swims at 7 p.m.
