Cardinals Edge Valparaiso, 3-2
March 30, 2016 | Baseball
VALPARAISO, Ind. – Junior Jarett Rindfleisch notched the game-winning single in the seventh inning to lift the Ball State baseball team to a 3-2 victory at Valparaiso Tuesday afternoon. The Cardinals have now won nine of their last 10 meetings against the Crusaders.
Valpo (8-14) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after four innings, but was held to one hit by the Ball State (15-11) bullpen the rest of the way.
The Cardinals tied the game with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Junior Sean Kennedy hit his second home run of the year, a two-run shot to left, to make the score, 2-2.
Junior Alex Call led off the following inning with a single to center field. After stealing second and advancing to third on a fly ball, Call touched home plate on a Rindfleisch single down the left field line.
Junior pitcher Evan Korson (1-1) earned his first win of 2016 thanks to pitching four innings of relief, striking out two batters and allowing only one run. Fellow junior BJ Butler tossed the final two innings to pick up his sixth save.
Every starter in the batting lineup notched a hit for the Cardinals. Call went 3-for-5 while Rindfleisch chipped in with two hits.
Ball State returns home this weekend to begin a seven game home stand against defending MAC Tournament champion Ohio. Friday's series opener against Ohio is set to begin at 3 p.m.
