
Men's Tennis Loses Close 4-3 Match To NIU Sunday

MUNCIE, Ind. - In a closely contested match on Sunday afternoon, the Ball State University men's tennis team fell to Northern Illinois, 4-3, at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 6-8 overall and 1-1 in MAC action while the Huskies improve to 14-5 on the year and 2-0 in league play.
The Cardinals No. 1 doubles tandem of Lucas Andersen and Andrew Stutz got Ball State on the board first after defeating Northern Illinois' duo Carlos Manzanas and Austin Russell, 6-3. After that, the Huskies would take a 6-3 match from Patrick Downs and Matt Helm on court three and then clinched the doubles point after defeating Conner Andersen and Tom Carney at No. 2 doubles.
Ball State fared better in singles, quickly taking a 3-1 advantage over Northern Illinois after earning wins on courts one, six and two. Lucas Andersen was the first match off the court, he didn't give up a game in set one and then took the second set from Manzanas, 6-1. Patrick Downs defeated the Huskies Russell at the No. 6 singles position, 6-1, 7-5. Stutz then gave Ball State its third point with his, 7-5, 6-3, victory over Lous-Philippe Hamel on court two. With the win, Stutz improves to 2-0 in league action.
Northern Illinois then rallied to win three straight singles matches. The Huskies tied the score 3-3 after Kevin Daun beat Marko Guzina, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. It came down to the No. 3 position, where Nemanja Guzina won the first set 6-4, but Georg Lundkvist came back to win the second and third sets, 6-4, 6-2.
The Ball State men's tennis team returns to Mid-American Conference action Friday at home against Binghamton at 2:00 p.m. in the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center, weather permitting.
