George Washington Wins Pitching Duel over Ball State, 2-0
February 28, 2016 | Baseball
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – In the fourth and final game of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational for the Ball State baseball team Sunday morning, George Washington pushed across the only two runs of the game to tally the win. The Cardinals finished their Florida excursion with a 2-2 record.
George Washington (3-4) starting pitcher Jacob Williams went 7.2 innings, struck out seven Ball State batters and did not issue a walk.
The Cardinals (3-5) did have their chances to score against Williams. In the top of the sixth, juniors Matt Eppers and Alex Maloney began the inning with back-to-back singles. However, senior Ryan Spaulding lined into a triple play to the shortstop.
The next inning, junior Alex Call led off with his second double of the game. He moved to third with one out, but the Cardinals could not find a way to get him home.
George Washington got on the board in the fourth inning thanks to Brandon Chapman's two-out, RBI single. The Colonials added an insurance run in the eighth inning with another two-out, run producing hit.
Sophomore pitcher Colin Brockhouse was the tough-luck loser for Ball State. In his first start on the mound this season, the righty went six innings, struck out three batters, allowed just four hits and one earned run.
Call and Eppers each recorded a pair of hits for the Cardinals.
Ball State returns to action next weekend at the Chanticleer Classic, hosted by nationally ranked Coastal Carolina, in Conway, South Carolina.
