Stayton's Six RBIs Leads Ball State to 11-5 Victory

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Junior Caleb Stayton piled up a career-high six RBIs as the Ball State baseball team erupted for 11 runs in an 11-5 victory over Milwaukee Friday evening. The game was the first of four this weekend for the Cardinals at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
Stayton's six RBIs were the most by a Ball State player since Kenny Mahala recorded eight RBIs in 2011 against Bowling Green. His biggest hit came in the fifth inning when his three-run home run, the first of the year by a Cardinal, put Ball State (2-3) on top for good, 6-4.
Fellow junior Alex Call opened that inning with a double down the left field line. Catcher Jarett Rindfleisch followed with a single up the middle to put runners on the corners and set the stage for Stayton.
Milwaukee (2-4) jumped on top early with two runs in the first inning and two more in the second to take a 4-2 lead. Stayton manufactured Ball State's first two runs with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the first.
Ball State pulled away with three more runs in the sixth and two in the seventh inning.
Seven of the nine Ball State starters tallied a hit, while junior Sean Kennedy, freshman CJ Alexander and junior Matt Eppers chipped in with the other RBIs.
Senior pitcher Matt Haro (1-1) made sure the lead would hold up. The lefty came on in relief in the fifth inning and went the rest of the way on the mound for the Cardinals. Haro struck out seven batters and only allowed one run the final five frames.
Ball State is right back in action at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational tomorrow, Feb. 27, with games against Kent State (11 a.m.) and Milwaukee (6 p.m.).
