
Women's Tennis Drops 4-3 Decision To SIU Saturday

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team lost a hard fought battle to Southern Illinois Saturday afternoon in the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. The Cardinals fell 4-3 to the Salukis despite dominating doubles play.
"Tough outcome today," said Ball State head women's tennis coach Max Norris. "I take responsibility. I think it was good for our team to be in that situation and we will learn from it going forward. We're excited for tomorrow."
With the loss, Ball State dropped to 3-2 overall while Southern Illinois improved their spring record to 2-3.
The Cardinals came out strong in double action against the Salukis taking all three matches from Southern Illinois. Ball State's No. 1 doubles tandem of Carmen Blanco and Rosalinda Calderon did not give up a point against Xiwei Cai and Ana Sofia winning 6-0 on court one. At the No. 2 position, Audrey Berger alongside doubles partner Peyton Gollhofer clinched the doubles point after defeating Meagan Monaghan and Vitoria Beirao, 6-2. Toni Ormond and Julia Sbircea then earned the Cardinals sweep with a 6-1 victory over Yana Golovkina and Athen Chrysanthou.
Ball State fought incredibly hard in singles action and almost walked away with the win over Southern Illinois. It came down to No. 2 singles with Ormond losing the first set to Chrysanthou 7-6 (6). Ormond then fought back in the second set earning a 6-3 victory over Chrysanthou but it wasn't enough as she would drop the last set 6-4 to the Salukis.
Gollofer and Berger each earned two games for the Cardinals with their singles victories on courts three and five, respectively. Gollhofer took down Monaghan, 6-2, 7-6 while Berger defeated Golovkina, 6-4, 6-2.
The Ball State women's tennis team continues action at home Sunday when it hosts Western Kentucky at 2 p.m. in the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
