TOLEDO, Ohio - The Ball State women's basketball team (8-5, 1-0 MAC) won its Mid-American Conference opener over Toledo (9-3, 0-1 MAC) by a score of 51-45 Saturday afternoon in Savage Arena. This is the second-straight season the Cardinals have opened league play with a victory over the Rockets.
Senior center Renee Bennett led the Cardinals in scoring with a 15-point performance while teammate junior forward Moriah Monaco earned a double-double after chipping in 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Both teams did not have their best shooting performances of the season, Ball State shot only 35.3 percent from the floor while Toledo was held to 24.6 percent. But the answer came down to rebounds and the Cardinals won that battle, 51 to 35.
The second half mimicked the first half of the ball game. Both teams fought hard trading baskets back and forth which led to another tie, 34-34 after the third quarter. Things started to go the Cardinals way again with 4:32 left in the contest after sophomore Destiny Washington knocked down a 3-pointer and Bennett was sent to the foul line shortly thereafter to put Ball State back in control by, 47-43. But turnovers continued to plague the Cardinals along with costly fouls which allowed Toledo to keep in the ball game.
With under a minute left the Cardinals held on tight to a two-point lead (47-45). Bennett was sent to the foul line but couldn't convert, giving Toledo back the possession with 21.5 seconds on the clock. A missed 3-pointer by Toledo's Sara Rokkanen forced the Rockets to send sophomore guard Carmen Grande to the line twice. Grande would convert on all four foul shots to seal the victory.
The Cardinals came out of the gates fast jumping out to an early 11-3 advantage over the Rockets at the 3:17 mark of the first quarter. Ball State got help from several Cardinals during that run with baskets from; senior guard Calyn Hosea, Monaco, Bennett, sophomore guard Destiny Washington and junior guard Frannie Frazier. But Toledo's 7-2 run to end the quarter cut the Cardinals lead to only three (13-10).
Ball State continued to control the contest up until the 5:47 mark of the second stanza when Toledo's Kaayla McIntyre made a layup that would give the Rockets their first lead of the ball game, 16-15. The Rockets held onto that lead for 5:44 until Ball State began to fight back, orchestrating a 7-5 run which was capped off by a 3-point basket from Monaco to make the score 21-21 at intermission.
The Ball State women's basketball team returns home Wednesday night for a cross-division match-up against Kent State. The contest is slated for a 7 p.m. tipoff in Worthen Arena and can be viewed on ESPN3.
