WBB Defeats Kent State 71-47 At Home In MAC Action

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team (9-5, 2-0 MAC) defeated Kent State (6-8, 0-2 MAC) 71-47 in Mid-American Conference action Wednesday night in Worthen Arena.
The Cardinals have not started the conference season 2-0 since 2014-15 when Ball State opened league action with wins over Bowling Green and Miami.
Ball State had three players reach double figures for the contest with junior forward Moriah Monaco leading the way with 24 points which included 6 of 9 shooting from the 3-point line. Senior center Renee Bennett had 13 points and nine rebounds while teammate senior guard Jill Morrison finished the night with 12.
In the first quarter, the Cardinals trailed Kent State by five (9-4) at the 6:27 mark but would then orchestrate an 18-5 run which was sparked by back-to-back 3-point baskets from Monaco.
After that, the Cardinals built an 11-point advantage with 6:21 remaining in the half. Kent State would quickly fight back to bring themselves within three (36-33) at intermission after the Golden Flashes Ali Poole knocked one down from behind the arc with just 11 seconds on the clock.
Ball State started the second half off with a 10-4 run to go up (47-37) which was capped off by a 3-pointer from Morrison with 3:36 left in the third quarter. Ball State also turned its defense up in the third quarter holding Kent State scoreless for the first four minutes of the quarter.
The Cardinals then went on to outscore the Golden Flashes 17 to 8 in the third quarter allowing Ball State to take a commanding 15-point lead (54-39) into the final stanza. Ball State played stronger defensively the remainder of the game, holding Kent State to a combined 14 points in the second half.
Ball State did not trail the entire second half. The Cardinals struggled from the floor only shooting 34.3 percent but did the job from the charity stripe shooting 75 percent. Kent State shot 42.3 percent in the first half but was held to only 12.1 percent in the second half. The Cardinals also won the rebound battle over the Golden Flashes, 51 to 43.
The Ball State women's basketball team continues league action when it hosts MAC West Division foe Western Michigan Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Worthen Arena. Saturday's game is the first of three doubleheaders that will be played with the Ball State men's basketball team. The Ball Sate men's basketball team will take on Bowling Green at 1 p.m.
