The 2016-17 Ball State men's basketball team will take the court for the first time Thursday with a 7 p.m. exhibition game against UIndy at Worthen Arena.
Admission and parking are free as fans get their first look at the defending Mid-American Conference West Division co-champions.
The Cardinals won 21 games last season and reached the postseason with a trip to the quarterfinals of the CIT, two things the program had not accomplished in 14 years. They are set to enter their fourth season under head coach James Whitford.
Six of the top eight scorers return from last year's team, led by preseason all-conference pick Franko House. The senior post player averaged 12.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game last season. Senior guard Ryan Weber also averaged double figures at 10.5 points per game a year ago.
The Cardinals are within 10 days of their regular season opener at Saint Louis and will test themselves against one of the top Division II programs in the country.
UIndy is coming off its sixth straight NCAA tournament appearance. The Greyhounds went 21-8 a year ago and enter their ninth season under head coach Stan Gouard.
UIndy is breaking in a group of eight newcomers this year. Guards Eric Davidson (8.9 ppg) and Alex Etherington (7.9) are the team's top returning scorers.
Ball State opens the regular season Nov. 11 at Saint Louis and then returns to Muncie for its home opener Nov. 15 against Indiana State.
