Women's Basketball Takes Down Evansville, 84-49
November 17, 2016 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - Five Ball State players reached double figures in the women's basketball team's 84-49 victory over Evansville Wednesday night in Worthen Arena. The Cardinals improve to 2-0 for the first time since the 2006-07, season. The win over the Purple Aces also marked the third-straight year Ball State has defeated Evansville.
"Really excited about what I just watched defensively on our end of the floor tonight," said Ball State head women's basketball coach Brady Sallee. "I thought we were really locked into the game plan. As a coach that puts a lot of stock into game plans, it bodes well for our basketball team. I don't usually call out certain players but the job that Calyn Hosea and Frannie Frazier did defensively on Sara Dickey tonight. Listen we've got so much respect for that young lady and how good she is, she is going to end up Evansville's all-time leading scorer. They did a tremendous job defending her and making it really tough for her tonight. You put all those things together on a defensive game plan and with all the weapons we have on offense it was going to be a pretty good night for the Cardinals."
Senior guard Jill Morrison led the Cardinals in scoring with 19 points while classmate senior center Renee Bennett was the second leading scorer behind Morrison with 16 points and 10 rebounds. This is the second-straight game Bennett has recorded a double-double and the third of her career. Junior forward Moriah Monaco and newcomer Destiny Washington finished the contest with 14 points apiece, while senior guard Calyn Hosea ended the game with 11 points.
The Cardinals continued to carry their success from last season's shooting onto this season by again outscoring their opponent for the second-straight contest. Ball State shot 51.5 percent from the field, while holding Evansville to 28.6 percent. Ball State also out-rebounded the Purple Aces 49 to 31.
Bennett again put Ball State on the board first after knocking down two from the charity stripe with just seconds off the clock. Evansville answered quickly with a basket of their own but the Cardinals went on a 13-6 run to take a 15-8 lead with 2:50 remaining in the first quarter.
The Purple Aces continued to play close to the Cardinals eventually making it a one-point ball game (17-16) at the 6:29 mark in the second stanza. After that, Morrison hit a 3-point basket which sparked a 20-9 run for the Cardinals. Hosea ended that run with three layups to give Ball State a 37-25 advantage at intermission over Evansville.
After halftime, the Cardinals continued their hot shooting and never looked back building their largest lead (84-43) with just 2:04 remaining in the contest.
The Ball State women's basketball team will head on the road for the first time this season when the Cardinals compete at the Savannah Women's Basketball Invitational in Savannah, Georgia, Nov. 22-24. The Cardinals face Auburn first on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. before taking on NC A&T Wednesday at 2 p.m. and will close the invitational Thursday against East Carolina with a 4:30 p.m. tipoff.
