
Women's Basketball Suffers 54-40 Loss To Auburn At Savannah Invite

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Ball State women's basketball team suffered a 54-40 loss to Auburn Tuesday night in the Cardinals first game of the Savannah Invitational held at the Civic Center.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 2-1 overall, while Auburn remains undefeated for the season improving to 4-0.
Junior forward Moriah Monaco led the Cardinals with an 11-point performance while teammate freshman guard Destiny Washington chipped in eight points and six rebounds. This is Monaco's fifth-straight game scoring in double figures dating back to last season.
For the first time this season Ball State struggled from the floor, the Tigers also did not have a great performance shooting only 35.6 percent, while the Cardinals were held to 34.0 percent shooting. Turnovers also became costly for the Cardinals throughout the contest with the Tigers scoring 20 points off of Ball State's 27 miscues.
The Tigers started the game with a 3-point basket from Brandy Montgomery but Monaco quickly answered with a layup off the dish from sophomore guard Carmen Grande. Both teams played a tough defensive effort in the first half. Auburn led by six (17-11) at the end of the first quarter.
Washington quickly answered with a jumper for Ball State at the start of the second stanza, sparking a 9-3 run to tie the game 20-20 with 6:52 left on the clock. But Auburn again came out on top to take a 27-23 lead over Ball State at intermission.
Auburn remained in control in the second half, eventually building its largest lead of the contest, a 21-point cushion (54-33) with 5:17 remaining in the game.
Ball State continues action at the Savannah Invitational when it takes on NC A&T Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Civic Center. The Cardinals will then close the invititational on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. against East Carolina.
