Point guard rated as one of top high school players in Minnesota
MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State men's basketball program has signed point guard Ishmael El-Amin, one of the top high school players in Minnesota, to a National Letter of Intent.
The 6-foot-4, 175-pound El-Amin averaged 15 points per game last season for Hopkins High School in Minnetonka, Minnesota. He led his team to a 31-1 record, a state championship and a No. 11 national ranking from MaxPreps.
"We are excited to add Ishmael to the program," Ball State coach James Whitford said. "Ishmael is a terrific basketball player. He comes from a great program and has only lost eight games in three years of high school basketball. He loves the game, has a great work ethic and has a really bright future."
An all-conference player, El-Amin has been rated as highly as 4 stars by the major recruiting services. He is listed as the seventh-best player in Minnesota's 2017 class by 247Sports.
El-Amin is the son of professional player and former Connecticut point guard Khalid El-Amin, who led the Huskies to the 1999 NCAA championship.
"Ishmael is a great kid, very well raised by his father Khalid and his mother Jessica Winnie," Whitford said. "He comes with a great value system and understands how to be a leader. I think he will be a true winner for us, both on and off the court."
El-Amin, who played his AAU basketball for D1 Minnesota on the Adidas circuit, is set to embark on his senior season at Hopkins.
Ball State begins its 2016-17 season Friday with a 7 p.m. CT (8 ET) tipoff at Saint Louis on Fox Sports Midwest. The Cardinals will open the home schedule Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Indiana State.
