LEADERBOARD
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Ball State men's golf team finished strong Sunday to put itself in the mix after day one at Notre Dame's Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic.
Michael VanDeventer and Johnny Watts led the Cardinals with 2-under par rounds of 68 to find themselves in a tie for third on the individual leaderboard. BSU also counted a 75 from Michael Makris and a 76 from Timothy Wiseman.
Ball State's four counters combined to play the final three holes at Warren Golf Course in 6 under par Sunday. Instead of finishing the day somewhere around 10th among the 15 teams, the Cardinals jumped up to sixth with a first-round total of 287 (+7).
They are seven strokes behind tournament leader Eastern Michigan (even) heading into day two of the three-day event. UTEP (+2) and Illinois State (+2) are tied for second, while Utah State (+3) and Notre Dame (+5) round out the top 5.
Notre Dame's Blake Barens owns the individual lead at 4 under par. He is two shots ahead of VanDeventer and Watts, both of whom are coming off top-10 finishes last week at the Firestone Invitational.
VanDeventer's 68 was the lowest round of his collegiate career. It was also his fourth straight round of even-par or better (two in the 60s), dating back to last week.
The Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic continues with round two Monday. The Cardinals' tee times start at 9:15 a.m. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
