Men’s Golf Fires Lowest Round since 2013 at Firestone

LEADERBOARD
AKRON, Ohio -- Led by Johnny Watts in second place, the Ball State men's golf team turned in its lowest two rounds of the season Monday to open Akron's Firestone Invitational.
The Cardinals started with a round of 281, their lowest since the 2013 NCAA Regional, and followed with a 290 in the afternoon. Ball State spent some time at the top of the leaderboard and ended the day tied for sixth place at 5 under par.
Illinois State (-14) holds the lead, while Akron (-12) is second. Cincinnati (-9) and Dayton (-9) are tied for third, while Eastern Michigan (-8) is one spot above Ball State in fifth. The final round will be played Tuesday on the North Course at Firestone Country Club.
Watts posted rounds of 68 and 70 to finish his day at 6 under par. He is part of a five-way tie for second place on the individual leaderboard, one shot behind Cincinnati's Austin Squires.
Michael VanDeventer was also in red figures all day, opening with a 69 in the morning and backing it up with an even-par 72. He is tied for 12th place at 3 under.
Michael Makris fired a 70 in the morning to give the Cardinals three counting rounds under par. He shot 75 in the afternoon and is tied for 32nd at 1 over. Timothy Wiseman also provided a pair of counting rounds and is tied for 44th at 3 over.
Tee times for the final round begin Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. Ball State will play with Chattanooga and Ohio. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
