MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State field hockey team will head to Kent, Ohio to play in the Mid-American Conference Tournament for the first time in five years.
The Cardinals, who finished the season 8-10 and 3-3 in the MAC, will be the fourth seed and will take on the number one seed Kent State (12-6, 6-0 MAC) in the first round of the tournament on Friday.
First year head coach Christy Longacre is excited and ready for the weekend's matchup.
"Our goal the entire season was to make it to the MAC Tournament," Longacre said. "We completed our goal and I couldn't be more proud of our girls. Now the new goal is to win the whole thing."
This moment is extra special for the seniors as they wrap up their last season by completing the goal they have had since they were freshmen. Senior Lexi Kavanaugh, the team's leading scorer the last four seasons, can't believe this moment finally came.
"Going to the MAC tournament seems so unreal," Kavanaugh said. "For the past couple of years we have always talked about it, but it just never happened. This year was different. We walked into the first day of preseason saying we wanted to make an impact and make some changes and that's exactly what we did."
"After we realized we were going to the tournament, I just remember grabbing my teammate Michelle Shampton and crying on her shoulder," Kavanaugh added. "Knowing that all the hard work is finally going to pay off is just so unreal. We are ready to start practice and get things done this week. I believe that we have a good chance this weekend if we can take advantage of this week like we plan too. All we have to do now is focus, work hard and believe in ourselves."
The energy surrounding the team is encouraging and creating a sense of positivity all around. The Cardinals are excited and ready to make their mark this weekend.
Ball State and Kent State will play the first game on Friday, Nov. 4 at 11:30 a.m. Miami and Longwood will play the second game, which is set to being at 2 p.m.
