Field Hockey Falls to Ohio State in Home Opener

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State field hockey team dropped its home opener to the Ohio State Buckeyes Monday afternoon, 3-0.
Ohio State (5-7) controlled the tempo of the game from the start. Maddy Humphrey scored both goals for the Buckeyes in the first half, her ninth and 10th goals on the season. Humphrey's first goal was in the 10th minute of the game on a deflection off of a Ball State defender. Humphrey struck again in the 23rd minute on a rebound off of a penalty corner.
The Buckeyes came out hot in the second half scoring just seconds after play began. The goal went to Adelaide Penzone on an assist from Maddy Humphrey.
The Cardinals had six shots and five penalty corners on the day. Junior midfielder Carley Shannon and senior Mikayla Mooney both had two shots. Redshirt junior Merinda Morley and senior Lexi Kavanaugh each had one shot. Senior goalkeeper Jordan Dues had six saves.
Ball State (5-7) was looking to pick up its second straight win over a Big Ten opponent after defeating Michigan State yesterday, 3-2.
The Cardinals are in action at home again on Sunday, Oct. 9, against Longwood. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
