LEADERBOARD
POWELLS POINT, N.C. -- For the second tournament in a row, the Ball State men's golf team has posted one of the top 5 rounds in program history.
This one -- a 277 (-7) Monday at Kilmaric Golf Club -- moved the Cardinals into first place with one round left to play at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate. The score was five strokes better than any other team on day two of the event.
Junior Keegan McKinney fired a career-best round of 4-under par 67 to vault to the top of the individual leaderboard, while sophomore Timothy Wiseman matched his career-best by carding a 69 for the second day in a row.
Ball State also counted a bogey-free 69 from Johnny Watts and a 72 from Michael Makris. Three scores in the 60s for the second day in a row helped the Cardinals post their fourth-lowest round of all-time, one shot better than their 278 two weeks ago at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic.
With a 36-hole total of 558 (-10), Ball State owns a three-shot lead over Akron (-7) heading into the final round. Tournament host Old Dominion (-3) is third in the field of 18 teams.
McKinney had five birdies and one bogey on his card Monday to move into first place individually at 6 under par. He holds a one-shot lead over Akron's J.B. Williams and ODU's David Langley. Wiseman is two shots back as part of three-way tie for fourth.
Watts (T19), Makris (T30) and Michael VanDeventer (T30) are also among the top 30 out of 93 golfers.
The final round of the tournament will be played Tuesday, and Ball State's tee times start at 8 a.m. Live scoring is available at birdiefire.com.
