Soccer’s Streak Snapped with Loss at Ohio

Cardinals still control their own destiny in MAC race
ATHENS, Ohio -- They say all good things must come to an end.
That was the case Thursday for the Ball State soccer team's school-record unbeaten streak. The Cardinals, who hadn't lost in 10 straight games, suffered a 3-1 defeat on a wet afternoon at Ohio.
"It was a combination of challenging field conditions and our team just not being able to score when we had chances," Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. "Our girls have been very consistent in their performance all season. We just didn't have it today."
The game was delayed 45 minutes by lightning at the start, but that didn't hurt Ball State (13-3-2, 7-1-1 MAC) coming out of the gates. Gabby Veldman scored in the eighth minute, marking her second straight game with a goal, as the Cardinals jumped on top early.
But that would be the highlight of the day. Ball State players had issues with footing on several instances in the defensive third, and Ohio (4-11-1, 2-7-0 MAC) took advantage of its opportunities.
The Bobcats scored twice in the last 25 minutes of the first half on goals from Alivia Milesky and Bryce Hueber. Milesky then added her second goal of the day in the 57th minute to extend the Ohio lead. The Bobcats became only the second team all season to score more than one goal against Ball State.
The Cardinals held a 13-8 advantage in shots for the day but could not find the back of the net after Veldman's opening goal. Lucy Walton led the team with four shots, while Chay McNitt put both of her attempts on frame.
Despite the loss, Ball State still controls its own destiny in its chase for another Mid-American Conference championship. The Cardinals will travel to play Sunday at 1 p.m. at Kent State in a battle of the top two teams in the league standings.
"We still believe strongly in what we can do, and we will bounce back," Roberts said. "Today was just one of those days."
